avast! Free Antivirus again took the pole position in AV
Comparative’s test for on-demand detection of malicious software,
repeating its top performance from last September.
avast! had the fastest scanning speed out of all 20 antivirus
programs in the independent organization’s test. It also led the pack in
balancing the demands of accurate malware detection with a minimum of
false positives.
“With avast! you can have both speed and accuracy,” says Vince Steckler, AVAST Software CEO. “avast!
shows you can have top-level protection without an array of bloatware
features that slow down your computer and lighten your wallet.”
avast! clocked in with the fastest scanning speed out of all 20
tested programs. Its throughput rate was 30% faster than Symantec/Norton
or AVG. avast! was nearly three times faster than Microsoft Security
Essentials, which had the second slowest scanning speed of all tested
programs.
Despite this blistering speed, avast! Free Antivirus still detected
99.3% of the nearly 1 million pieces of malware thrown at it during the
AV Comparatives test, topping the detection rates achieved by
Symantec/Norton, AVG, Kaspersky and Trend Micro. Microsoft Security
Essentials, the only other free application in the test, scored
significantly lower than avast! in malware detection, ranking 15 out of
20.
avast! 5.0 was designed for speed. At the time of its launch, tests
on Intel® Core™ i5 mobile processor showed a 40% improvement in speed
from the previous version and a parallel decrease in power use.
Of the 20 developers participating in this AV Comparatives test,
six go to market with both free and paid-for antivirus programs. AVAST
Software was the only one of these confident enough to enter its free
program in a head-to-head competition against all – free or paid-for –
applications.
